N. Hammerschlag at TED x

In October 2012, Dr. Neil Hammerschlag spoke at the TEDxMIA conference, presenting his research on BMAA contamination in shark fins. The research suggested that consuming shark fin soup could increase your risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease.


Rosenstiel School (RSMAS)

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is where RJD calls home. Housed within this top-notch marine school are world renowned scientists investigating pressing marine issues from climate change and corals to aquaculture to ocean currents. Tune in for a compelling series of video podcasts sharing breaking discoveries in marine and atmospheric science.


Southern Fried Science

Founded in 2008, Southern Fried Science is a marine science, environmental science, and conservation blog by a team of marine science graduate students who love the ocean, science, conservation, philosophy, education, and outreach. We discuss a wide variety of topics and believe that nothing is so sacred it cannot be criticized. Our specialties are deep-sea ecology, conservation genetics, shark conservation, fisheries policy, human/environment interactions, and science communication. In this series of “Shark Science Mondays” the team shares a series of video podcasts tackling some of the more controversial shark conservation topics.


A. Gallagher: Stress Physiology

In October 2011, Austin Gallagher, PhD student with the RJ Dunlap Program, was invited to the American Museum of Natural History to present some of his research at the International Student Conference on Conservation Science. The following is a video of his award-winning 4-minute speed-talk that focuses on some of the stress physiology and catch and release shark work he and Dr. Neil Hammerschlag are currently engaged in throughout Florida and the Bahamas.


D. Shiffman: Social Media for Conservation

In 2011, David Shiffman, PhD student with the RJ Dunlap Program, gave a presentation on the use of Facebook, Twitter and blogs in the modern conservation movement. His presentation was part of the IUCN Shark Specialist Group’s “Securing the Future of Sharks and Rays” symposium at the International Marine Conservation Congress (Victoria, Canada 2011).


Marine Conservation Biology Student Conference

During the week of November 28, 2011, Graduate Students from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences presented a series of 12 minute conference-style talks on hot topics in marine conservation biology for Dr. Neil Hammerschlag’s class.


Juliet Eilperin: Demon Fish

Juliet Eilperin is the national environmental reporter for the Washington Post. In her book, Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks, she explores the historical, semantic, cultural and economic issues that mold the way humans understand sharks. In this lecture, titled “Our Fascination and Fear of Sharks,” she explores these topics presented in her book. Recorded October 19th 2011.


Elliott Norse: MPA’s

As part of the Ecosystem Science and Policy Seminar Series for the University of Miami, Dr. Elliott Norse joins us with a lecture titled “The Evolution of Marine Protected Areas.” Among Dr. Norse’s accomplishments, he worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Ecological Society of America, the Wilderness Society and the Ocean Conservancy before founding the Marine Conservation Institute in 1996 of which he is the Director.

Twitter Teach-in’s

Each semester, shark scientist and RJD Ph.D. Student David Shiffman leads a 30-minute ‘Teach-In’ on Twitter. He selects a topic to discuss such as overfishing or sea turtle conservation, shares a base foundation of knowledge, then opens it up to questions from followers. It is a great way to discuss a variety of topics via a convenient and popular social media platform.
